Question

Two forces F1 and F2 acting on a body have a resultant R1 if F2 is doubled theR2 new resultant forms are a right angle with F1 Prove that R1 and F2 have the same magnitude.

Open in App
Solution

R1=F1+F2...eq1
R2=F1+2F2...eq2
F1.R2=0 (vector dot product for perpendicular/right angle vectors)... eq3
Prove |F2|=|R1|
Sub eq2 into eq3
F1.(F1+2F2)=0
F1.F1+2F1.F2=0
|F1|2=2F1.F2
Get the magnitude of R1 from eq1
|R1|2=(F1+F2).(F1+F2)
|R1|2=F1.F1+F2.F2+2F1.F2
|R1|2=|F1|2+|F2|2+2.F1.F2
Sub in |F_1|^2
|R1|2=|F1|2+|F2|2|F1|2
|R1|2=|F2|2
|R1|=|F2|
