Solution

Combustion:

  • “A chemical process in which a substance reacts with oxygen to give off heat is called combustion.”

In jar B, the candle remains lighted for a longer time as it contains oxygen which helps in the combustion of the candle.

Combustion reaction:

  • The combustion reaction occurs in the presence of oxygen gas.
  • It is a highly exothermic reaction that takes place in the presence of an oxidant which is oxygen.
  • During combustion, energy is released in the form of heat and light

Thus, in jar B the candle remains lighted for a longer time as oxygen is required for the combustion while in jar A which is filled with carbon dioxide, the candle will go off after a time as carbon dioxide does not support combustion.
