Question

Two horizontal forces are acting on a block placed on a frictionless surface: 3 N towards the left and 5 N towards the right. Given the block is moving to the left with a constant speed of 5 m/s, what additional force do you need to apply to it?

Solution

The sum of all the forces acting on a body should be balanced for a body to move at a constant speed. In the vertical, weight is balanced by normal.
Net horizontal force on the block = 5 N - 3 N = 2 N (towards right)
To balance this, we must apply a force of 2 N towards left.
