Two identical cans A and B containing equal quantities of water at same temperature are placed in sunlight with thermometer. One can is blacked but other has polished surface. Which thermometer will record higher temperature and why?

The cans are shifted in a room, which thermometer will record lower reading and why after 25 minutes?

Two identical cans in sunlight:

  1. Black body is good absorber of heat.
  2. Polished surface will reflect the sunlight.
  3. Hence T1 thermometer will record a higher temperature.

Two identical cans in room.

  1. Good absorbers are also good emitters.
  2. Therefore can A emit more heat as compared to can B.
  3. Hence thermometer T1 will record lower reading.
