Question

Two identical containers A and B each of volume V0 are joined by a small pipe. The containers contain identical gases at temperature T0 and pressure P0. Container A is heated to temperature 2T0 while maintaining B at the same temperature. If the common pressure of the gas is P and n1 and n2 are the number of moles of the gas in A and B respectively, then choose the correct option(s):

Solution

The correct options are
A P=43P0
C n1=23P0V0RT0
D n2=43P0V0RT0
From the data given in the question,
Initial condition for container A
P0V0=n0RT0
Number of moles of the gas in container A is
n0=P0V0RT0
Initial condition for container B
P0V0=n0RT0
Number of moles of the gas in container B is
n0=P0V0RT0

Final condition:
For A, PV0=n1R(2T0)
Number of moles of the gas in container A is n1=PV02RT0
For B. PV0=n2RT0
Number of moles of the gas in container B is n2=PV0RT0
As the quantity of gas remains constant, we can say that
Total number of moles of the gas in both containers after joining = Total number of moles of the gas in both containers before joining
i.e n1+n2=2n0
PV02RT0+PV0RT0=2P0V0RT0
P=43P0
Also, n1=23P0V0RT0
& n2=43P0V0RT0
Thus, options (a), (c) and (d) are correct answers.
