Question

Two identical particles B and C each of mass 50 g are connected by a light rod of length 30 CM. Another particle A of same mass moving with a speed u=60 CM/s strikes B, in a direction perpendicular to AB, and sticks to it. The whole process takes place on a smooth horizontal plane. Find the angular velocity ω of the system about its centre of mass, immediately after the impact.

Solution

R.E.F image
final com of system =m(l2)+m(l2)+m(l2)3m
=l6 above center a rod
com serving angular momentum about point at final com
mu (l2l6)+m(0)(l2l6)+m(0)(l6+l2)
=IW(1)
I=m(l2l6)2+m(l2l6)2+m(l2+l6)2
=ml29+ml29+4l29
=23ml2(2)
from (1) and (2)
mul3=23ml2w
w=u2l
