Question

Two identical prisms with right triangles as the base are joined to form a rectangular prism. Each right triangle has a height of 29 m and base 15 m.

The rectangular prism has a height of 34 m. What is its lateral surface area?

Solution

Let perimeter of the base = P and height = H.

Lateral surface area = Perimeter of the base × Height

= P × H ................(1) [0.5 mark]

Base perimeter of the rectangular prism = 2 × ( Right triangle's height + Right triangle's base length )
= 2×(29+15)
= 2×44
= 88 m [1 mark]

Lateral surface area = 88×34
= 2992 m2 [0.5 mark]
