Question

Two identical rings of radii 0.1 m are placed co-axially at a distance 0.5 m apart. The charges on the rings are 2μC and 4μC respectively. The work done in transferring 5μC charge from centre of one ring to other is

Solution

R.E.F image
The charge Qo=5μc is transferred from AB,d=0.5m
Potential due to a charged ring at a distance x from
In center In given by :-
v=KQr2+x2 where k=14πEo,r=0.1m
Potential at center A,
VA=kq1r+kq2r2+d2 [potential due to both rings]
=q×10q(2×1060.1+4×1060.12+0.52)=2.5×105V
Similarity at B,
VB=kq2r+kq2r2+d2
=9×109(4×1060.1+2×1060.12+0.52)=3.95×105V
Thus work done
W=Qo(VBVA)
=5×106(3.95×1052.5×105)
W=0.7250.75J
