Question

Two identical travelling waves, moving in the same direction, are out of phase by π/2 rad. What is the amplitude of the resultant wave in terms of the common amplitude ym of the two waves.

Open in App
Solution

Let the waves be-

y1=Asin(kxωt)
And y2=Asin(kxωt+90o)=Acos(kxωt)

y=y1+y2

y=A[sin(kxωt)+cos(kxωt)]

y=2A[12sin(kxωt)+12cos(kxωt)]

y=2A[sin(kxωt+45o)]

Hence Amplitude=2A=2ym
