Question

Two identical uniform discs roll without slipping on two different surfaces AB and CD (see figure) starting at A and C with linear speeds v1 and v2, respectively, and always remain in contact with the surfaces. If they reach B and D with the same linear speed and v1=3 m/s, then v2 in m/s is ___. (g=10 m/s2)

Solution

Kinetic energy of a purelyrolling disc
=12mV2+12(m2)V2=34mV2
Using conservation of energy on both discs and equating their final energies.
34mV21+mg.30=34mV22+mg.27
3mg=34m(V22V21)
4g=V229
V22=49
V2=7
