Question

Two identical uniform discs roll without slipping on two different surfaces as shown in figure. If they reach points B and D with the same linear speed, then v2 (in m/s) is
[Take g=10 m/s2]

Solution

As they roll without slipping, this means work done by friction i.e Wf=0
Condition for pure rolling,
v=r×ωω=vr
Hence, we can apply conservation of mechanical energy.
For surface AB, taking reference of PE=0 at B
M.Ei=M.Ef
(KERot)i+(KETrans)i+PEi=(KERot)f+(KETrans)f+PEf
12Iω2+12mv21+mgh=12Iω2+12mv2
(12×mr22×v21r2)+12mv21+mgh=12×mr22×v2r2+12mv2+0
[I=mr22 for disc.]
3v21+4gh=3v2 ...(1)
where v1=3 m/s, h=30 m
3×(3)2+4×10×30=3×(v)2
v2=409 ...(2)

Similarly for surface CD, [Taking refrence of PE=0 at D], since discs are identical, from Eq.(1) we can write,
3v22+4gh=3v2
Final velocity is same for both discs i.e v. Substituting from Eq.(2),
3(v2)2+4×10×27=3×409
h=27 m
v22=409360
v22=49
v2=7 m/s
The speed v2 is 7 m/s
