  • Two jewels of Kannada literature are Pampa and Ponna. These are the two medieval poets belonging to Jain community. Jain age of literature was called Augustan age of Kannada literature as there were more than 200 poets. Kannada is the only language in which Ramayana and Mahabharata exist in Jain version.
  • Pampa was famous for his works Vikramarjuna Vijayam which was Mahabharata in the Jain version with Arjuna as a hero. He also wrote Adipuranam. For his enormous contributions to literature, he was called Adi Kavi.
  • Contemporary of Pampa was Sri Ponna, the court poet of Rashtrakutha king Krishna III. He received titles like Kavi Chakravarthy and Ubhaya Chakravarthy. His famous works were Shanty Puranam, Jinaksharamale etc.
