Question

Two light waves having the same wavelength λ in vacuum are in phase initially. Then the first ray travels a path of length L1 through a median of refractive index μ1. The second ray travels a path of length L2 through a medium of refractive index μ2. The two waves are then combined to observe interference effects. The phase difference between the two, when they interfere, is

A
2πλ(L1L2)

Solution

The correct option is B 2πλ(μ1L1μ2L2)
Optical path length is the product of geometric path length multiplied by refractive index.
Hence, path length for the first wave is: μ1L1
path length for the first wave is: μ2L2
path difference: Δ=μ1L1μ2L2
Phase difference between the two waves is: δ=2πλ(Δ)=2πλ(μ1L1μ2L2)
