Question

Two liquids A and B form an ideal solution. The solution has a vapor pressure of 700 torr at 80oC. It is distilled till 2/3rd of the solution is collected as condensate. The composition of the condensate is XA=0.75 and that of the residue is X′′A=0.30. If the vapor pressure of the residue at 80oC is 600 Torr, which of the following is /are true?

Solution

The correct options are
A The composition of the original liquid was XA=0.6
C P0A=25002 Torr
D P0B=500 Torr
The vapour pressure of solution is 700 torr.
Hence, XAPoA+XBPoB=700
The vapour pressure of the residue is 600 torr.
Hence, X"APoA+X"BPoB=0.30PoA+0.70PoB=600......(ii).
Let x and y represent initial moles of A and B respectively.
x=0.75×23(x+y)+0.30×13(x+y).....(iii)
And XA=xx+y=0.6
These equations are solved.
XA=0.6,XB=0.4,PoA=25003torr; PoB=500torr
