Question

Two long current carrying thin wires, both with current I, are held by insulating threads of length L and are in equilibrium as shown in the figure, with threads making an angle 'θ' with the vertical. If wires have mass per unit length 'λ' then the value of I is:

Solution

Consider a length l of both wires, which would
have mass = λl
as force per unit length (f) due to magnetic field
is :-
f=μ0I24πd, we have for length l;
force = Fm = fL= μ0I2λ4πd
also from figure, d=2Lsinθ and Fmλlg=tanθ, so:-
Fmλlg=M0I2l4π(2Lsinθ)×1λlg=tanθ
I2=λg.4πsin2θμ0cosθI=sinθ4πλgμ0cosθ(Ans)
