Question

Two long metallic strips are joined together by two rivets each of radius 2 mm. Each rivet can withstand a maximum shearing stress of 1.5×109N/m2. Assuming that each rivet shares the stretching load equally, the maximum tensile force the strip can exert without rupture is

Solution

The correct option is D 3.8×104N
Shearing force for each rivet=Shearing Stress×Area=1.5×109×π(2×103)2, giving, 18.85kN
Since force is shared equally by both the rivets, so total force that can be loaded on strip = 2 times this force = 37.7kN, or nearly 38kN (or 3.8×104N)
