Question

Two mark Questions:
A single pea plant in your kitchen garden produces pods with viable seeds, but the individual papaya plant does not. Explain.

Solution

The pea plant is bisexual or monoecious, as the male and female sex organs are present on the same plant and hence self-pollination is possible and as a result, seeds can be produced.
The papaya plant, on the other hand, is dioecious, i.e. male and female sex organs are present on different plants, and to reproduce, cross-pollination is a must.
Thus, when only a single plant is present, there will be no pollination hence, no fruit and seed.
