Two masses 8 kg and 12 kg are connected at the two ends of a light inextensible string that goes over a frictionless pulley Find the acceleration pulley. Find the acceleration of the masses and the tension in the string when the masses are released .

T= tension of the string
a= common acceleration
Tm1g=m1a(1)
m2gT=m2a(2)
(m2m1)g=(m1+m2)a
a=(m2m1)gm1+m2-------- (3)
From (1) and (3)
T=m1g+m1(m2m1)gm1+m2
T=m2gm1+m2(m1+m2+m2m1)
T=2m1m2gm1+m2(4)
Given, m1=8kg,m2=12kg,g=10m/s2
(3)=> a=1288+12×10=420×10=2ms2
Now, from equation (1)=> T= m1a+m2g
T= 8×2+8×10
T= 96N
