Question

Two masses of 10kg and 20kg respectively are connected by a massless spring as shown in the figure. A force of 200N acts on the 20kg mass. At the instant shown the 10kg mass has an acceleration of 12m/s2 rightwards. What is the acceleration of 20kg mass?

Solution

The correct option is C 4m/s2
As given the acceleration of the 10 kg mass is 12m/s2
so the spring force that would have been acting on the mass = F = ma
or, F=10×12=120N in the right direction
while same amount of spring force will act on the 20 kg mass in the left direction
so the net force on the 20 kg mass in the right direction = 200120=80N
hence the acceleration of 20 kg mass = 80/20=4m/s2
