Two mercury thermometers are constructed such that one has a spherical bulb and the other an elongated cylindrical bulb of same volume. Which will respond quickly to temperature changes?
Elongated cylindrical bulb.
As we know that a sphere has the least surface area for a given volume. So obviously cylindrical bulb has a greater surface area than a spherical bulb of the same volume. Hence, the latter thermometer will respond to temperature changes more quickly than the former.
