Solution

The correct option is C 12.5%
Let intensity of the incident, unpolarized light be I0.

The intensity of polarized light, emerging from the first Nicol prism (I1) (polarizer), will be I0/2

i.e. I1=I2

The intensity of light emerging from the 2nd Nicol prism is given by Malu's law,

I2=I1cos2θI2=I02cos260

I2=I8=0.125 I0

So, 12.5% of the incident intensity will emerge from the second Nicol prism.

Hence, (C) is the correct answer.
