Question

Two numbers are in the ratio 5 : 6. If 8 is subtracted from each of the numbers the ratio is 4 : 5. Find the numbers

Let the two numbers be x and y.
According to the question, xy=56
y=6xs(i)
Also,x8y8=45
5(x8)=4(y8)
5x40=4y32
5x4y=8( ii )
On putting the value of y=6x5 in Eq. (ii), we get
5x4(6x5)=8
25x24x5=8
x=40
On putting the value of x=40 in Eq. (i), we get
y=6×405=48
Hence, the two numbers are 40 and 48 .
