Let the number be 100

First number = $\frac{40}{100}\times$ 100 = 40

Second number = $\frac{50}{100}\times$ 100 = 50

$\therefore$ Comparing first and second number we get : $\frac{40}{50}\times$ 100 = 80%

$\therefore$ The first number is 80% of the second number.
