Question

Two particles A and B, having opposite charges $$2.0\times 10^{-6}$$C and $$-2.0\times 10^{-6}$$C, are placed at a separation of $$1.0$$cm. Write down the electric dipole moment of this pair.

Solution

The distance between the charges is $$1.0\ cm$$
The magnitude of two charges is $$2\times 10^{-6}\ C$$

The Dipole moment is given as:
$$=q\times l$$
(where $$q=$$ magnitude of charge $$l=$$separation between the charges)

Substitute the values in above expression:
$$=2\times 10^{-6}\times 10^{-2}cm$$

$$=2\times 10^{-8}cm$$.
