Let two simple harmonic motions are
y=asinωt;y=asin(ωt+ϕ)
In first case a2=asinωtsinωt=12
cosωt=32
In second case
a2=asin(ωt+ϕ)
12[sinωt.cosϕ+cosωtsinϕ]
12[12cosϕ+32sinϕ]
1cosϕ=3sinϕ
(1cosϕ)2=3sin2ϕ
On solving we get
cosϕ=+1 or cosϕ=12
i.e., ϕ=0 or ϕ=120o
