Solution

The correct option is B 18mu2

Conservation of momentum along x-direction:

mu+mu2=2mvxvx=3u4

Conservation of momentum along y-direction:

0+mu2=2mvyvy=u4

(K.E.)i=12m u2+12m[(u2)2+(u2)2]

=12mu2+mu24=3mu24

(K.E.)f=12(2m)(vx)2+12(2m)(vy)2

=122m[(3u4)2+(u4)2]=58mu2

Loss of KE=(KE)i(KE)f

=mu2(6858)=mu28

Hence, (B) is the correct answer.
