Question

Two pendulum bobs of mass m and 2m collide elastically at the lowest point in their motion. If both the balls are released from a height H above the lowest point, to what heights do they rise for the time after collision.

Solution

By energy conservation,
12m1v21=m1gH
v1=2gH
Similarly, v2=2gH
After collision velocity will be u1 and u2
After momentum conservation,
m1v1=m2u2
m2gH=2mu2
u2=gH2
Similarly, u1=8gH
Therefore ,by energy conservation
m1 goes height H1
12m1u21=m1gH1
12×8gH=gH1
H1=4H
Similarly, H2=H2
