Question

Two perfect gases at absolute temperature T1 and T2 are mixed. There is no loss of energy. Find the temperature of the mixture if masses of molecules are m1 and m2 and the number of moles of the gases are n1 and n2 respectively.

Solution

Energy is conserved. Therefore, initial energy = final energy
Let final temperature is T.
Initial Energy=32n1RT1+32n2RT2
Final Energy = 32(n1+n2)RT
Equating initial energy and final energy we get,
T=n1T1+n2T2n1+n2.
