Question

Two persons A and B, each of mass in are standing at the two ends of rail-road car of mass M. The person A jumps to the left with a horizontal speed u with respect to the car. Thereafter, the person B jumps to the right, again with the same horizontal speed u with respect to the car. Find the velocity of the car after both the persons have jumped off.

Solution

Speed of the cart when first person (A) jumped
So, according to momentum conservation
mu=(M+m)vv=muM+m
Now the cart is moving with velocity v towards right and person B jumps
Again
Pi=(m+M)(muM+m)Pf=mu+M(v)mu+M(v)=muv=0
