Let AB and CD denote the height of the two persons and CA the distance between them. Then, according to the question, we get the following figure.

In ΔCDE,
tan (90θ)=ha2
cot θ=2ha - - - (1)

In Δ ABE, tan θ=ABEA=2ha2
tan θ=4ha - - - (2)

Multiplying (1) by (2), we get
cot θ×tan θ=2ha×4ha 1=8h2a2 h=a22
