The correct option is C6 hours Let the cistern be filled by pipe A alone in x hours.
Then, pipe B will fill it in (x+6) hours. ∴1x+1x+6=14 ⇒x+6+xx(x+6)=14 ⇒8x+24=x2+6x ⇒x2−2x−24=0 ⇒(x−6)(x+4)=0 ⇒x=6 [Neglecting the negative value]
So, pipe A alone will fill the cistern in 6 hours while pipe B alone will fill the cistern in 12 hours.
