Question

Two plates of 7 mm thick are connected by a triple riveted lap joint Zig-Zag pattern. The diameter of rivet is 18mm and pitch of rivet is 80 mm. What is the magnitude and mode of failure of joint ?
[Assume, σt=90 MPa, τ 40 MPa and σc = 120 MPa].

Solution

t = 7 mm, P = 80 mm d = 18 mm

σt = 90 MPa,

σs=τ = 40 MPa, σc = 120 MPa
Ft=(pd)t×σt=(80180)×7×90

=39.06×103N (Tear)

Fs=π4d2τs×3=π4×(182)×40×3=30.534×103N (Shear)

Fc=3×σc×d×t=3×120×18×7=45.36×103N (crushing)

Among Ft,Fs and Fc, the least value is of Fs.

Fail by shear with load 30.534 kN
