Two point charges q1=+9 μC and q2=1 μC are held 10 cm apart. Where should at third charge +Q be placed from q2 on the line joining them so that charge Q does not experience any net force ?

It follows from figure that charge Q will experience net force in the X-direction if it lies at any point between AB.

Let x be the distance of Q from q2. Then forces exerted on Q by q1 and q2 respectively are

F1=q1Q4πϵ0(0.1+x)2=9×106Q4πϵ0(0.1+x)2

and F2=q2Q4πϵ0x2=1×106Q4πϵ0x2

Net force on Q=F1+F2
Net force on Q is zero if F1+F2=0

9×106Q4πϵ0(0.1+x)21×106Q4πϵ0x2=0

9=(0.1+x)2x2

3=0.1+xx (ignore negative sign, as we get negative value of x)

x=0.05 m=5 cm
