If we plot these points on the number line

Here P lies to the left of 9.

$\Rightarrow$ P is 17 units less than 9

Now 9 - (P) = 17

$\Rightarrow - P = 17 - 9$

$\Rightarrow - P = 8$

$\Rightarrow P = - 8$
