Two resistors 2 Ω and 5 Ω are connected in series with a 7 V battery. Find the potential difference across the 5 Ω resistor.
5 V
For series connection, effective resistance in the circuit is given by:
R=R1+R2
∴ Total resistance in circuit, R=2 Ω+5 Ω=7 Ω
The amount of current through the effective resistance when connected to 7 V battery:
I=VR (ohm's law)
I=7 V7 Ω=1 A
The current through each resistance is same in the series circuit. Hence, potential drop across 5 Ω resistor is given by,
V=1 A×5 Ω
V=5 V
