Question

Two resistors of resistance 4 Ω and 6 Ω are connected in parallel to a cell to draw 0.5 A current from the cell.
a) Draw a labelled diagram of the arrangement.
b) Calculate current in each resistor.

Open in App
Solution

(a) Circuit diagram:
Equivalent resistance of the circuit:
Given,
R1=4Ω and R2=6Ω are in parallel
The resistance of the parallel combination
(R1||R2) is
Req=R1R2R1+R2=4×64+6=2.4Ω
Emf of the cell:
Resistance of the parallel combination,
Req=2.4Ω
Current drawn from the cell, I=0.5A.
By applying Ohm’s law for Req ,
V=IReq=(0.5A)×(2.4Ω)=1.2V
(b) Current in each resistor:
The potential difference across both the resistors is same and is equal to the emf of the cell.
Applying Ohm’s law for R1=4Ω
V=I1R1
Current through the resistor R1
I1=VR1=1.2V4Ω=0.3A
Applying Ohm’s law for R2=6Ω
V=I2R2
Current through the resistor R2
I2=VR2=1.2V6Ω=0.2A
