Question

Two rods identical in geometry but of different materials having coefficient of thermal expansion α1andα2 and Youngs moduli Y1andY2 respectively are fixed between two rigid massive walls. The rods are heated such that they undergo the same increase in temperature. Solution

The correct option is C 3 : 1
l=lαTl/l=αT
stress = YX strain
stress = YαT
For first rod, stress=Y1α1T
For second rod, stress=Y2α2T
Since, stress are equal
Y1α1T=Y2α2T
or Y1/Y2=α2/α1
=62=31
Y1:Y2=3:1
