Question

Two rods of different materials having coefficients of linear expansion α1 and α2. Young modulus γ1 and γ2 respectively are fixed between two rigid massive walls. The rods are heated such that they undergo the same increase in temperature. There is no bending of rods.

Solution

The correct option is D 3:2
We have γ=σε
hence ε=ΔLL=σγ
But ΔLL=αΔθ where Δθ is the change in temperature. Hence σ=YαΔθ in this case stress is same
Hence, Y1α1Δθ=Y2α2Δθ
Y1Y2=α2α1=32
