Question

Two rods of different materials having coefficients of thermal expansion α1 and α2 and Youngs
moduli Y1 and Y2 respectively are fixed between two rigid massive walls. The rods are heated such
that they undergo the same increase in temperature. There is no bending of the rods. If α1 and α2 are
in the ratio 2:3, the thermal stresses developed in the two rods are equal provided Y1:Y2 is equal to:

2:3

Solution

The correct option is C 3:2
We know that γ=stressstrainγ=Young's modulus
Stress=γ. strain1
Also, Strain=LL=αTL
using equation 1
γ1.strain 1=γ2.strain 2
γ1.γ1TL=γ2.γ2TL
γ1γ2=α2α1=32
Hence ratio of Y1:Y2 is 3:2
