Solution

The correct option is C l1=1 cm,l2=2 cm
Given:
The coefficient of linear expansion of aluminium, αA=22×106 C1
The coefficient of linear expansion of steel, αS=11×106 C1
The total length, l1+l2=3 cm
when the temperature is raised by a certain value, say t C, and if l*1 and l*2 are the new lengths of the rods are respectively, then:
l*1=l1(1+αAt)(1)
l*2=l2(1+αSt)(2)
Also, both the rods increase by the same amount.
l*1l1=l*2l2(3)
From (1), (2) and (3), we get l1αA=l2αS
l1l2=αSαA=11×10622×106=0.5
l1=0.5l2
We know that l1+l2=3 cm
1.5l2=3
l2=31.5=2 cm
and l1=1 cm
