Question

Two sinusoidal sound waves with frequencies 108 Hz and 112 Hz at your ear simultaneously. Each wave has an amplitude of 1.5×108m when it reaches your ear.
What is the maximum amplitude of the total sound wave? What is the minimum amplitude?

Solution

When two sound waves of slightly different frequencies and equal amplitudes superimpose on each other, then their resultant amplitude is given by
Anet=2acos2πf1f22t
here f1=112Hz and f2=108Hz and a=1.5×108m
Anet=2acos(2π1121082t)
Anet=2acos(2π×2t)
Anet=2acos(4πt)
Amplitude is maximum when cos4πt is maximum i.e 1
Anetmax=2a
Anetmax=2×1.5×108m
Anetmax=3×108m
Amplitude is minimum when cos4πt is minimum i.e 0
Anetmin=2a×0
Anetmin=0
Anetmin=0
Maximum Amplitude of total sound wave is 3×108m and minimum amplitude is 0.
