Question

Two sliders A and B connected by a light rigid rod 10 m long, move in two frictionless shafts as shown in the figure. If B starts from O and is at rest initially, determine the velocity of B ( in m/s upto two decimals) when x=6 m. Assume mA=mB=200 kg and mc=100 kg,233=0.25.

Solution

From constraints,
x2+y2=L2
Differentiating
2xdxdt+2ydydt=0;
xdxdt=ydydt;
dxdt=yxdydt
Velocity of B=(yx)× velocity of A.
As when x=6,y=8,
Velocity of B=86vA=43vA
Applying the law of conservation of energy,
P.E. lost =mA.g.2+mc.g.6
Since when B moves 6 m from O,A moves 2 m downward from its original position and C moves 6 m downward.
P.E. lost =200×2g+100×6g=1000g

As vB=vC
K.E. gained =12mAv2A+12mBv2B+12mCv2C
=12×200×916v2B+12×200×v2B+12×100×v2B
=12×200×v2B{916+1+12}
=100{3316}v2B

KE gained=PE lost
100×3316v2B=1000×9.8
v2B=98×1633
vB=7×4233=7.00 m/sec
