In the figure the two dipole moments act at an angle of 120. As they are equal the resultant dipole moment will be at an angle of 60 from the y axis.


So, Resultant dipole moment will be

|pR|=p21+p22+2p1p2cos120

from the question, p1=p, p2=p

|pR|=p2+p2+2pp×(12)

|pR|=p2=p


Now electric field acts along the x axis

XOR=θ=30

So, torque acting on dipole due to uniform electric field will be

τ=pEsinθ

τ=pEsin30=pE2

Hence, (c) is the correct option.
