Question

Two solenoids, ‘P’ and ‘Q’ are taken. The coil in solenoid ‘P’ is wound over a wooden cylindrical core and the coil in solenoid ‘Q’ is wound over a soft iron core. In which solenoid is the magnetic field stronger?

Solution

  1. The solenoid ‘Q’ will have a stronger magnetic field.
  2. The strength of the magnetic field depends on the nature of the material on which the coil is wound.
  3. Magnetic materials produce a stronger magnetic field when compared to non-magnetic materials.
  4. Wood is a non-magnetic substance while the soft iron core is a magnetic substance.

Hence, the coil in solenoid ‘Q’ is wound over a soft iron core will produce stronger magnetic field.
