Question

Two solid blocks of identical size are submerged in water one block is lead and the other is aluminum upon which is the buoyant force greater?

Solution

Buoyant Force:

  1. The buoyant force is directly proportional to the density of the fluid, acceleration due to gravity and the volume of liquid displaced. It does not depend on the material of the body submerged.
  2. The buoyant force is given by the formula,

Buoyantforce=ρgv

where ρdenotes the density of the fluid, g denotes acceleration due to gravity, v denotes the volume of liquid displaced.

3. Here, since both the blocks have the same size so they will displace the same quantity of water and will experience the same buoyant force.

4. Hence, both the blocks have the same size so they will displace the same quantity of water and will experience the same buoyant force.
