Answer is B.
Maximum potential energy of deformation is equal to loss in kinetic energy during deformation upto maximum deformed state,
U=12m1(u1cosθ)2+12m2(u2cosθ)212(m1+m2)v2
=122(4cos30)2+124(2cos30)212(2+4)(0)2 or U = 18 Joule.
Hence, the maximum potential energy of deformation is 18 J.
