Question

Two spherical bobs of same mass and radius having equal charges are suspended from the same point by strings of same length. The bobs are immersed in a liquid of relative permittivity εr and density ρ0. The density σ of the bob for which the angle of divergence of the strings is same in the air & in the liquid is xεrρ0εr1. Find x.

Let F1 and F2 be the electrostatic forces between the bobs in the two cases respectively.
now, F1=εrF2
When in air, W1=mg and tanθ=F1W1=F1mg.....(1)
When immersed in the liquid, W2=mg(1ρ0σ) and tanθ=F2W2=F2mg(1ρ0σ)...(2)
From (1) and (2), F1mg=F2mg(1ρ0σ)
or εrF2mg=F2mg(1ρ0σ)
or εrεrρ0σ=1
or εrρ0σ=εr1
σ=εrρ0εr1
