The speed of a transverse wave v in a string of length l , having a tension T is given by ,
v=T/m ,
where m=M/l mass/unit length of string ,
for first string v=T/m1 ,
for second string v=T/m2 ,
now m2=M2/l and m1=M1/l ,
given M2=4M1 or m2=4m1 ,
dividing v by v ,
we get v/v=m1/m2
or v/v=m1/4m1=1/4
or v/v=1/2
or v=v/2
