Question

Two strips of metal are riveted together at their ends by four rivets, each of diameter 6.0 mm. What is the maximum tension that can be exerted by the riveted strip if the shearing stress on the rivet is not to exceed 6.9 × 10⁷ Pa? Assume that each rivet is to carry one quarter of the load.

Solution

Given, the diameter of each rivet is 6.0mm and the shear stress on the rivet is 6.9× 10 7 Pa.

The shear stress on a rivet is given by the equation,

shearstress= F A = 4F π d 2

Substituting the values in the above equation, we get:

6.9× 10 7 Pa= 4F π ( 6.0× 10 3 m ) 2 F=1951N

The maximum load on all four rivets is,

P=4F

Substituting the value in the above equation, we get:

P=4×1951N =7.8× 10 3 N

Hence, the maximum load on the entire four rivets is 7.8× 10 3 N.
