Two thin lenses have combined power of 10 D. When separated by 20 cm their equivalent power is 6.25 D. Their individual powers in D are
Given that,
Power of combination P=10D.....(I)
Distance between lenses d=20cm=0.2m
Now, power of combination
P′=P1+P2−d(P1+P2)
6.25=10−0.2(P1+P2)
−0.2(P1+P2)=6.25−10
(P1+P2)=3.750.2
P1+P2=18.75
Now,
(P1−P2)2=(P1+P2)2−4P1.P2
(P1−P2)2=10×10−4×18.75
(P1−P2)2=25
(P1−P2)=5D......(II)
Adding equation (I) and (2)
P1+P2=10
P1−P2=5
Now,
2P1=15
P1=7.5D
Now, put the value of P1 in equation (I)
P2=10−7.5
P2=2.5D
Hence, the power of lenses P1=7.5D and P2=2.5D
